The Call to Socialism

November 4, 2008, was bound to be an historical event regardless of the outcome. The First African-American President or the First Woman Vice-President was destined to be the headline of every paper in the world; either being a profound achievement in a nation whose history has been littered with the oppression of Black Americans and women. Today, we are now a nation that has triumphed in the Race War, the end of the Gender War is sure to follow. The election of America’s First African-American is one for which we as a nation should rise up in celebration.

With altruistic will, we gleefully listened to the promises of change in a system that is clearly broken. It is for this that most Americans cast their votes on November 4th. Though there may have been some that voted for Obama on the sole ground that he is African-American, some who voted for McCain because he was not, the majority of Americans voted for the candidate they believed most qualified to repair the breaks in Washington. As we celebrate the change in America’s leadership, we listen to the call of socialism. The hope that springs forth from socialist ideologies beckons us to follow:
“This is the moment when we must build on the wealth that open markets have created, and share its benefits more equitably. Trade has been a cornerstone of our growth and global development. But we will not be able to sustain this growth if it favors the few, and not the many.” –Barack Obama

“Become strong again in spirit, strong in will, strong in endurance, strong to bear all sacrifices.”-*

“[Our country] is prepared to agree to any solemn pact of non-aggression, because she does not think of attacking but only acquiring security.”-*

“[Our nation] wants peace because of its fundamental convictions. And it wants peace also owing to the realization of the simple primitive fact that no war would be likely essentially to alter the distress in [another country]... The principal effect of every war is to destroy the flower of the nation... [Our nation] needs peace and desires peace!”-*

“Whoever lights the torch of war…can wish for nothing but chaos.”-*
The call to socialism even appeals to the Christians who believe strongly in community and relationship; yet they struggle with the concept of socialism being the potential loss of their freedom to worship. They are assured their freedom to worship with the words that follow:
“There could be no issue between the Church and the State. The Church, as such, has nothing to do with political affairs. On the other hand, the State has nothing to do with the faith or inner organization of the Church.”-*

“What we have to fight for is the freedom and independence of the fatherland, so that our people may be enabled to fulfill the mission assigned to it by the creator.”-*
Yet in the socialist societies that have developed since the time of Karl Marx’s The Communist Manifesto. Freedom of religion has been inhibited even prohibited. The world has even bore witness to the bloody persecution of millions simply for their faith be it Christian, Judaism, even Buddhism. Since religion is the personal convictions of an individual or group, the only religion that can openly prevail in a socialist society is atheism. This will become the Church of the State.
“Our program necessarily includes the propaganda of atheism.”
-Vladimir Lenin

“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.”-Karl Marx

"The personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew"- Adolf Hitler

"I will never allow anyone to divide this people once more into religious camps, each fighting the other"- Adolf Hitler
Fading are the words of warning from our Founding Fathers. These men fought for freedom from the tyranny of government control.

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
-Benjamin Franklin

“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.”-Patrick Henry
They built the foundation upon which our nation grew and thrived. They were visionaries with the capacity to understand that the words penned within the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution were fundamental to freedom. They also had the foresight to enable the people of this nation to amend the constitution for the betterment of this nation as future events dictate. In as such, African-Americans gained the right to vote on February 3rd, 1870, with the ratification of the 15th Amendment, though, regrettably, not permitted in many parts of the country. On August 18th, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified granting women the right to vote.

President-Elect Barack Obama is not going to introduce socialism to the people of the United States of America. We the people have already been indoctrinated. Though the whispers of socialism were being heard as far back as suffrage for black men, the call to socialism became clearly heard in the early 1900’s with the birth of The Socialist Party under Eugene V. Debs, first Presidential candidate for The Socialist Party.

The Democrat Party under Franklin D. Roosevelt became the platform upon which socialism would build its strength. Roosevelt initiated the New Deal. Many of the relief programs have long since vanished, however, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Social Security System and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are still operating today with the SEC being the largest. This nation is witnessing some of what poor government management of these programs has cost the middle-class taxpayer. Yet, “we the people” continue to bow down at the altar of big government surrendering more freedoms while grumbling about the growing tyranny within the government. We are a nation of discontent.
“Find out just what the people will submit to and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”
-Frederick Douglass
It is deeply held in certainty by many that only under a socialist government can people live in true equality. It is believed that class warfare and poverty will be eliminated. With socialism, all people will receive healthcare. The virtues of socialism seem to express compassion for humanity, yet at the price of that which is fundamental to being human. By design, man is given the liberty to think freely, to make choices, to pursue ambitions. Under socialism, only the “elite” are granted these freedoms.
“All human situations have their inconveniences. We feel those of the present but neither see nor feel those of the future; and hence we often make troublesome changes without amendment, and frequently for the worse.”- Benjamin Franklin

Compassion for humanity begins in the heart of man not in the offices of government. When Christ spoke to His followers in Matthew 25, verse 35 and following, did He say “When I was hungry and thirsty the government gave me food stamps, when I needed clothes the government issued me clothing, when I was sick the government provided universal healthcare, when I was in prison the government was my source of encouragement?” No, He said, “Whatever YOU did for one of My brothers or sisters, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did for Me.[i]” Christ was speaking to those who share His love and compassion for humanity and have done such things, not by force, but from their hearts.

The quotes denoted by an asterisk are those of the founder and leader of National Socialism (Nazism), Adolf Hitler. These are the very words that he used to rally support for his cause from the German people and to maintain their loyalty throughout the tyranny he poured out upon “undesirable” populations of Europe. Socialism in Germany resulted in the deaths of 43 million innocent people. Currently, in the People’s Republic of China, millions are serving under the oppression of communist rule. How many American voices cried out in protest prior to the Olympic Games in Beijing are also hailing the virtues of socialism?

It is not that those who oppose socialism fear it out of ignorance; it is that historically speaking socialism leads to the captivity of our fundamental liberties. It is that those who oppose socialism value their liberties. Most of these people do not dispute the need for change they simply oppose dependency on government. George Santayana wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.” Interestingly, more than 50 years earlier, it was Karl Marx who wrote, “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” Yet we choose to ignore history by answering the call to socialism with our hands held out before us to be shackled in the chains of big government.

[i] God’s Word Translation (1995); Matthew 25:40
The New American Standard (1995) reads: 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'
